The Screw Displacement Axis (SDA) method offers a unique advantage when analyzing glenohumeral joint motion. It utilizes the concept of either the intersection point or the midpoint of the common perpendicular between two instantaneous screw axes to measure the three-dimensional Instantaneous Center of Rotation (ICR). This approach provides valuable insights into joint stability or laxity. In a stable, tight joint, the intersection points of all screw axes cluster within a small spherical area (as illustrated). Conversely, when joint instability occurs due to pathologies affecting the capsuloligamentous structures or rotator cuff, these intersection points become more scattered and occupy a larger spherical volume. This dispersion pattern serves as a visual indicator of the joint's compromised stability.
